Geneva, the European Headquarters of the United Nations, was the venue for a conference on the plight of the Iranian refugees residing in Iraq on February 28, 2013. The event followed a brutal attack on these refugees in their camp close to Baghdad Airport on February 9.

ICD was among sponsors of this conference that aimed to highlight the responsibility of the United Nations to guarantee safety of these refugees.

Representatives of Iranian communities from various parts of Europe attended the conference to express their concern against threats to the lives of these defenseless refugees. Many members of families of these refugees are among Iranian communities across Europe and North America.

The Iranian refugees were moved to Camp Liberty over the past year promised safety and security by the UNAMI. The rocket attack on February 9 left 7 dead and up to 100 wounded, some critically.

The conference was addressed by former US and European officials including Governor Ed Rendell, Ambassador John Bolton, European Commissioner Gunter Verheugen, President of European Parliament Delegation for Relations with Iraq and former Euro MP Paulo Casaca. Former UN official responsible for human rights in Iraq made some very serious revelations about the UN failures to guarantee safety and security of the residents in Camp Liberty.

The conference was attended by over 2000 including many representatives of NGOs with consultative status to the United Nations.
